Residency Renewal in Armenia: What you need to know

If you currently hold a residence permit in Armenia, you have the advantage of applying for a renewal to maintain your legal status without interruptions. While the renewal process is largely similar to the initial application, it ensures continuity between the two permits, provided all requirements are met.

Eligibility for Residency Renewal

To be eligible for residency renewal in the Republic of Armenia, applicants must first hold a valid residence permit that is due to expire in not less than 30 days. Additionally, a valid passport or travel document is essential for the renewal process as they are used as identification documents. In some cases, such as for dependents of Armenian residence permit holders or those of Armenian descent, a document proving family ties may also be required.

Background

Our client, Mr. G.B., a Canadian national, was initially granted a temporary residence permit in Armenia with our assistance, based on his ownership of an operational business in the country. Shortly after receiving his residence card, Mr. G.B. expressed his desire to stay longer in Armenia, as his business was thriving, and he was thoroughly enjoying life in Armenia.

Based on his plans to remain in the country, we advised him to prepare for a renewal of his residence permit as his current one approached expiration.

In keeping with our commitment to proactive service, we informed Mr. G.B. that we would reach out to him approximately four months before his permit’s expiry to begin the renewal process.

Although Armenian law requires the renewal application to be filed at least 30 days before the permit expires, we set our own timeline four months in advance because of the limited appointment availability due to high demand at the Migration and Citizenship Service. This early start allows us to book an appointment in a timely manner often necessary due to the high demand for appointments and ensure ample time for gathering required documents.

Permanent Residence Status Renewal Process

Mr. G.B. reconnected with us only in November, with his permit set to expire in early January. Given the timing, we secured the earliest available appointment, which was for January 15. This date, unfortunately, fell after his permit’s expiration, which raised concerns for Mr. G.B. about potential fines and the temporary lapse in his legal status.

Overstay

We reassured Mr. G.B. that while overstaying does usually incur a fine, in his case, there would be grounds for an exception. His delay was due not to non-compliance, but to the overextended scheduling system at the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Armenia.

To support his case, we documented that we had attempted to secure an appointment prior to his permit’s expiration.

Document Preparation and Filing in the Republic of Armenia

As with initial applications, renewing a residence permit requires a comprehensive set of documents to be submitted. The required documents included:

  • Mr. G.B.’s original passport and notary certified Armenian translation of it,
  • A copy of his current residence card,
  • An extract from his LLC in Armenia,
  • A medical check certificate issued within the last two months,
  • Recent passport-sized photos,
  • The state fee payment receipt, amounting to 105,000 AMD under current regulations.

Additionally, we provided an appointment confirmation email as supporting evidence to help avoid overstay fines.

Role of the National Security Service Interview for Foreign Citizens

Following the submission of his renewal application, we informed Mr. G.B. that the processing time could take up to 60 days. We committed to monitoring the status of his application closely, beginning our follow-ups with the Migration and Citizenship Service 30 days after submission.

Additionally, we prepared for an interview with the National Security Service officer, generally expected within 1-2 months of submission. This interview would involve reviewing his documentation to verify that his business was operational and legal, and that he maintained the financial means and genuine intention to reside in Armenia.
