M.N., a Russian citizen, and R.B., a U.S. citizen, decided to register their marriage in Armenia after learning about the simple and straightforward process. They approached Vardanyan & Partners for legal assistance to ensure the process went smoothly and complied with Armenian law.
Advantages of Registering a Marriage in Armenia
Registering a marriage in Armenia offers several notable advantages:
- No State Fee: The standard marriage registration process is entirely free of charge.
- No Requirement for Armenian Citizenship: Neither spouse needs to be an Armenian citizen to register their marriage in Armenia.
- Remote Registration: The process can be completed remotely, without the spouses needing to be physically present in Armenia.
Documents Required for Marriage Registration
To begin the marriage registration, it is essential to gather the following documents:
- Passports of the Spouses and Notarized Translations: M.N. and R.B. provided their passports, and we arranged notarized translations into Armenian.
- Certificate of Unmarried Status: This can be a certificate issued by the state office in their country or, for some countries (e.g. the United States or Canada) that do not provide such certificates, a declaration of unmarried status certified by local notary can be used instead. This document must be no older than six months and must include an apostille or consular seal.
- Documents for Dissolution of Prior Marriages (if applicable): If either spouse was previously married, documents confirming the dissolution, such as a divorce certificate or court ruling, must be submitted. These must also bear an apostille or consular seal. For R.B., we submitted his apostilled divorce certificate as part of the registration process.
After ensuring all documents met Armenian requirements, we proceeded with the next steps.
Options for Marriage Registration Submission at the Civil Acts Registration Services

There are two options for submitting the marriage registration application:
- Personal Submission: Applicants visit the Civil Acts Registration Services in person to submit their application.
- Remote Submission: Using a Power of Attorney (PoA), we can submit the application on behalf of the applicants. The PoA must be notarized in Armenia or certified by an Armenian consulate abroad. The PoA itself does not require notarization and can be in simple written form.
In M.N. and R.B.'s case, they opted for personal submission and visited the Civil Acts Registration Services themselves.
Application Submission and Accompanying Clients
At Vardanyan & Partners, we guide our clients through the application submission process. For M.N. and R.B., we scheduled an appointment at a convenient time and ensured their application was filed smoothly and efficiently.
Marriage Registration Timeline and Fees
Marriage registration is scheduled on the date specified by the applicants in their submitted application. However, Armenian law mandates that registration must occur:
- No earlier than the next working day after submission.
- No later than six months from the submission date.
The Civil Acts Registration Services will conduct the state registration of the marriage, ensuring all procedural steps are completed legally.
One of the key advantages of marriage registration in Armenia is that there is no state fee for the standard process. However, if the marriage is conducted under ceremonial conditions, a state fee of 40,000 drams (around USD 100) is required at the time of application submission. If the registry office employee is requested to conduct the ceremony at a location chosen by the couple, the fee is 60,000 drams (around USD 150). For ceremonies held in a sports or concert hall, the cost is 40,000 drams (around USD 100). On non-working days, the fees are 80,000 drams (around USD 200) and 60,000 drams (around USD 150), respectively.
Armenian legislation allows couples to receive their marriage certificate during a ceremony. M.N. and R.B. chose to receive their marriage certificates under ceremonial conditions.
The ceremony is conducted in Armenian, but an interpreter can be present if needed.
Please note that the ceremony must be arranged at least one month in advance. At least one member of the couple must attend in person to sign the contract and make the payment in order to secure the date.
The ceremony can be held at a location recommended by the Civil Acts Registration Services or at another venue chosen by the couple. M.N. and R.B. decided to have their ceremony at their hotel in a large room. Vardanyan & Partners handled all arrangements with the Civil Acts Registration Services, including coordinating the day, time, and location of the ceremony. On the ceremony day, the state official solemnly handed over the marriage certificates to M.N. and R.B.
