Exploring Pathways to Special Residency in Armenia

‍Introduction to Special Residency in Armenia

Special residency, commonly referred to as a 'special passport,' is a prestigious document conferring a 10-year residency status within Armenia. Distinguishing itself from traditional residence permits, this permit is issued in the form of a passport. This article is a guide to different routes available for attaining special residency in Armenia.

What is the Digital Nomad Visa for Armenia?

Armenia allows remote workers from a number of countries to live and work in Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days. Remote workers who stay past the 180-day deadline can register as “private entrepreneurs” and obtain one-year (temporary) or five-year (permanent) residence permits.
The above rules apply whether you are a freelancer, remote worker, or self-employed. There is no minimum monthly income to show. However, an immigration officer may want to make sure you are able to cover your living expenses in Armenia.

Different Routes to Special Residency in Armenia

Armenia provides two primary pathways to obtain special residency: ethnicity-based and exception-based special residency applications.

Ethnicity-based Special Residency Programs
Given Armenia's extensive diaspora across the globe, the country extends an opportunity for diasporans to secure a 10-year special residency. The applicants can be eligible for this residency status upon the presentation of documentary evidence affirming Armenian ethnicity. Such substantiating documents include:
-  The applicant's baptism certificate, issued by a recognized church organization listed in a governmental decree, validating their or their parents' Armenian ethnicity.
-  The applicant's, their parents', grandparents', or siblings' birth certificates, or any government-issued document affirming Armenian ethnicity.

Exception-based Special Residency Programs
In addition to ethnicity-based applications, Armenia also extends an exception-based special residency program. This avenue is tailored for individuals without Armenian lineage who have made substantial contributions to the Armenian economy or culture. As of the present, specific criteria for eligibility remain undisclosed. Consequently, prospective applicants are advised to secure a 1-year or 5-year residence permit before pursuing special residency.

How to Apply for Special Residency in Armenia

Foreign nationals can initiate their special residency applications within Armenia or at Armenian embassies and consulates abroad. In Armenia, applications are submitted to the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, either in person or remotely via a designated Power of Attorney. To submit an application within Armenia, applicants must prearrange an appointment with the Migration and Citizenship Service.

The application submission necessitates the provision of the following documents:
-  A valid passport.
-  A notarized translation of the passport
-  Six photographs measuring 35x45mm.
-  A duly legalized document substantiating the legal foundation of the application.(government or church-issued document)
-  A biographic questionnaire.

Typically, governmental processing of special residence permit applications spans a period of 60-70 calendar days. It is noteworthy that extensions of the special residence permit are possible, and they can be applied for more than once.
